Description
Greenwich Village is largely a landmarked district. Its name is a link with its namesake, Greenwich, England, and it keeps as many connections to its past as possible. The homes of artists, writers, actors, public personalities and several scandalous events are here for the discovery. In Russell Shorto's recently published book, The Island at the Center of the World, we learned that a Dutch settler from the Long Island Village of Greenwyck (Pine District) circa 1650, would relocate in Manhattan and give his property that name (it would seem to be from this not from English sources that Greenwich Village would receive its name).
