Melbourne Easy Guide
Description While sunny Queensland has its Surfer's Paradise, temperate Victoria has a Shopper's Paradise in the heart of the capital city. Now more than ever Melbourne is the ideal destination to head for your next shopping expedition in Australia. With so many new malls & stores to explore its worth taking time to do some planning. We hope that you will find Melbourne Easy Guide to be an informative starting point for planning your visit.
Melbourne is a charming blend of historical Victorian-era (1800-1900's) architecture along with ultra modern & culturally radical design. The city is increasingly a popular place to live, not just to work, and it's a favorite place for international students to study. There are many beautiful parks & gardens within easy reach. The tranquil waters and sea side of Port Phillip Bay are just a short drive away.
As well as sight-seeing and shopping, there is no shortage of entertainment year round no matter what your preferences are. Melbourne annually hosts the Australian Grand Prix (late March) & the Australian Open (January). There are theatres, a casino & numerous concert venues.
Getting there
So you have arrived at Melbourne airport and collected your luggage. Your journey is not quite over yet. The airport is about a half hour drive to the city and is not serviced by direct public transport links. If hiring a car, you need to be aware of the highway tariff system called City Link. Taxi is the quickest way into town. Or if you are traveling on a budget, take the Skybus.
Getting around
Melbourne is a fairly small city on the global scale. All of your sightseeing in the city can be done comfortably on foot or using the well-integrated public transport system of trams, trains & buses. A daily adult ticket costs AUS$6.10 and gives you unlimited travel in the city & beyond.
The central business district is laid out on a rectangular grid around 4 by 2 kilometers, bounded by Flinders, Spencer, Latrobe & Spring Streets. A modern underground train subway called the City Loop follows the perimeter of the CBD. The City Loop is the fastest way to travel between key points on the edge of the city. A free tram service also operates on this route -- these are the old fashioned trams painted redish brown.
The central retail district is an area around 2 by 1 kilometers, bounded by Flinders, Elizabeth, La Trobe & Russell Streets. This is where you will find most of the shops and shopping malls. You can comfortably explore the whole retail district on foot, or jump on a tram if you intend to travel over a city block or more. Trams run on the major roads through the retail district: Swanston, Elizabeth, Collins, Bourke & La Trobe.
